Cr\u00e9\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019origine en 1971 par Steven Bush et une jeune troupe d\u2019interpr\u00e8tes, cette r\u00e9invention radicale de <em>Hamlet<\/em> met en sc\u00e8ne 2 Hamlets, 2 Oph\u00e9lies et de nombreux fant\u00f4mes. Port\u00e9e par une \u00e9nergie jeune, politiquement engag\u00e9e et formellement non conventionnelle, l\u2019\u0153uvre a \u00e9t\u00e9 capt\u00e9e sur le vif par la \u00ab cam\u00e9ra libre \u00bb de Richard Leiterman, sous la direction de Ren\u00e9 Bonni\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Le film constitue \u00e0 la fois une \u0153uvre cin\u00e9matographique remarquable et un rare t\u00e9moignage d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience th\u00e9\u00e2trale singuli\u00e8re. Son \u00e9quipe de cr\u00e9ation comprenait Steven Bush, directeur et principal instigateur du projet sc\u00e9nique; George Koumantaros, compositeur, codirecteur et directeur musical; Jim Bearden, codirecteur et coach; David MacMillan, \u00e0 la prise de son; Rod Crawley, assistant au montage; Victor Klassen, assistant \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne; ainsi que le producteur canadien F. R. \u00ab Budge \u00bb Crawley.<\/p><p>La distribution comprenait Richard McKenna et Tove Shere dans les r\u00f4les des deux Hamlet, Linda Butler et Jan Kudelka dans ceux des deux Oph\u00e9lie, ainsi que Steven Bush, Jim Bearden, Dan Hennessey, Bryan Eaton, Leon Stephens, Becke Keller et d\u2019autres artistes issus d\u2019un collectif communautaire de jeunes et de personnes dans la vingtaine. L\u2019\u00e9nergie de la production et son esprit exp\u00e9rimental demeurent vivement pr\u00e9sents dans le film.<\/p><p><em>Thog\u2019s Hamlet<\/em> a vu le jour \u00e0 un moment de profonds bouleversements politiques, sociaux et artistiques. En 1971, le Canada vivait encore dans le sillage d\u2019Expo 67, tout en \u00e9tant confront\u00e9 aux tensions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la souverainet\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec, \u00e0 la Loi sur les mesures de guerre, aux manifestations contre la guerre du Vietnam, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 la visibilit\u00e9 croissante des mouvements Black Power, Red Power et du f\u00e9minisme.
