An Introduction for Visitors at the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatres
On the third floor of the Cascading Lobbies, you will see that part of this space is being developed as the home of Canada’s Theatre Museum.
What you will see today
The Preview is a rotating temporary display which brings together objects from the museum’s collection along with loans from theatres and personal archives. Each edition highlights items connected to broader stories in Canadian theatre. Today we feature items from the recent global touring production of Mahabharata by Why Not Theatre.
Positioned at the entrance to a larger exhibition area that will open after renovations, the Preview exhibitions offer an early glimpse of what our museum will reveal. Our offerings will invite you to consider the people, contexts, and creative processes behind Canadian theatre, including dance, opera, circus, puppetry and more!

What’s ahead
The museum is a work in progress! Plans for more permanent exhibitions include an introduction to Canadian theatre and feature exhibitions exploring major themes and influences shaping theatre in Canada. Spotlight exhibitions and temporary pop-up displays will respond to events in theatre, society, and the wider world. Canadian theatre history is a window into the evolution of our cultural identities and Canadian culture. There is so much to be proud of.

Currently, this museum space is open during special events—including talks, screenings, celebrations, and educational programs.
You can also explore more of our programs online, such as the La collection Legend Library (Bibliothèque des bâtisseurs), an ongoing video collection featuring interviews with leading figures in Canadian theatre.
